What to Look for When Renting an Apartment, Pt. 1
Apartment hunting can be a difficult task, especially when you don’t know what to look for. An apartment can seem great at first glance, and then quickly turn into a nightmare. Here are a few tips that you can use to help you select an apartment that suits your needs.
Look for Signs of Infestation
An infestation in your new apartment can turn into a stressful situation extremely quickly, so it’s important to check the apartment for signs of any bugs or mice. Insects do occasionally get inside, but be sure that cockroaches don’t run out when you open a fridge or cabinet, or any other small space. You should also check the floor, closets, and all kitchen surfaces for mouse poop. Mouse poop can be as small as poppy seeds so take an extra close look.
Look for Fire Alarms
Your apartment needs smoke detectors in order to be up to code, so check for them. If you are looking at an apartment complex, look for a building-wide fire alarm and fire extinguishers in the common areas.
Check the Water
One of the most important things you should do when viewing a potential apartment is go through the place and turn on all of the faucets. Ensure that the water is coming out steadily and clear. You should also turn on the shower to check the water pressure. Finally, flush the toilet a few times to ensure that it is working properly.
